The
titled "house on the border" actually exists
as some small towns around Jelenia Gora, where Poles
displaced from the Eastern Borderlands and Germans from
Lower Silesia found their common home. The Poles who
decided to go back to Poland from the Soviet Union after
the border changes spent weeks in a long journey to
the so-called "Recovered Territories." They
arrived in Lower Silesia, near Luban, where they were
to settle in their new homes. Over there, they met Germans,
who had been the owners of the houses so far and who,
after the escape to Germany acting on a first impulse,
against all logic and displacement plans of the Allies,
came back to their family homes. War enemies a while
ago became neighbors. They accepted their fate determined
by the history with dignity.
